PL-300 is not a three-day shortcut to mastering Power BI. It is a role-based exam covering data preparation, modelling, visualisation, analysis, management and security. Some experienced candidates may need little preparation. A beginner usually needs enough hands-on work to explain why a model behaves as it does.
Start with Microsoft's current study guide, because the objectives change.
Step 1: read the objectives for your exam date
The PL-300 study guide publishes the skills measured and records updates. The current structure allocates substantial attention to each of data preparation, modelling, and visualisation and analysis, with a smaller section for managing and securing Power BI.
Do not prepare from an old course outline alone. Map every current objective to one of three states:
- I can do this without instructions.
- I can do this with documentation.
- I have not done this yet.
That list is your plan.
Step 2: build a small model from imperfect data
Use a data set with wrong types, missing values and multiple tables. In Power Query, profile the columns and make each transformation understandable. Then create a model with sensible dimensions, relationships and measures.
You should be able to explain filter direction, relationship cardinality and why a calculation is a measure rather than a calculated column. Memorising menu locations is not enough.
Step 3: make the report answer a question
Choose visuals because they suit the comparison, trend or composition being shown. Test slicers and visual interactions. Add alt text, check tab order and make sure colour is not the only carrier of meaning.
Microsoft's objectives include selecting appropriate visuals, applying filters, using drillthrough and bookmarks, and improving report usability. A decorative dashboard is not evidence that those skills are secure.
Step 4: practise the service and security work
Publish to an appropriate practice workspace, inspect refresh and credentials, and understand the difference between workspace roles, app audiences and row-level security. Licensing affects which sharing routes are available, so check the current product guidance rather than memorising an old pricing table.
Never use production data or weaken tenant policy for exam practice.
Step 5: use the official practice tools
Microsoft provides a free Practice Assessment and an exam sandbox from the certification page. Treat practice questions as diagnosis. For every wrong answer, return to the relevant Learn documentation and reproduce the behaviour in a safe environment when possible.
The certification requires a passing exam score. Microsoft associate certifications also have an annual renewal process using a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn. Check the certification page for current scheduling and renewal details.
A defensible readiness check
Book the exam when you can build and explain a small solution across all four skill areas, not when a calendar says your preparation should be finished. Certification confirms the assessment result. Your portfolio and working explanations show how you apply the skill.
