I've been asked to build my first Power BI report, but I only know Excel

Excel-strong analysts are asked to build a first Power BI report before they know the workflow. They need a safe sequence from sample data to one finished report before production issues arise.

This is a workplace problem tracked in Microsoft 365 Report Builders. Below is the solution path currently available for it.
