Power Platform Certifications in 2026: What to Choose

Choose a Power Platform credential for the work you want to demonstrate, not because an old diagram calls it the next rung on a ladder.

Microsoft's credential catalogue changed substantially in 2026. Check the live page before booking an exam.

The short answer

PL-900: Power Platform Fundamentals is the broad starting credential.
PL-400: Power Platform Developer Associate is for applied developer work.
AB-410: Intelligent Applications Builder Associate covers AI-enabled apps, data models and flows across Power Platform.
PL-200: Power Platform Functional Consultant Associate is scheduled to retire on 31 August 2026.
The former Power Platform Solution Architect Expert certification retired on 30 June 2026.

Credentials can change again. Treat this as a dated guide and use Microsoft's credential browser as the source of truth.

PL-900: understand the platform

Microsoft describes PL-900 as a beginner credential for people starting with Power Platform.

The current skills outline covers:

business value of Power Platform
Dataverse, connectors and environments
administration and governance concepts
Power Apps
Power Automate
agents in Copilot Studio

Microsoft says PL-900 can help prepare you for role-based certifications, but it is not a prerequisite for them.

Choose it when you need broad platform literacy. Do not present it as evidence of production development or solution architecture.

PL-400: demonstrate developer breadth

Microsoft's Power Platform Developer Associate credential is intermediate.

Its candidate profile includes:

custom user experiences and business logic
integrations and data conversion
complex Power Fx and workflow expressions
authentication and security
application lifecycle management
Power Platform CLI
JavaScript, JSON, TypeScript, C#, HTML, APIs and Azure

PL-400 is a poor first choice if you have never built and troubleshot solutions. The exam outline expects applied knowledge, not just product vocabulary.

AB-410: build intelligent applications

Microsoft introduced the Intelligent Applications Builder Associate credential in 2026.

Its scope includes:

Dataverse data models
canvas and model-driven apps
Power Automate cloud flows
Power Pages
agents, AI models and prompts
governance, responsible AI and application lifecycle awareness

The role still requires sound Power Platform foundations. Natural-language creation does not remove the need to understand data, permissions, environments and solution ownership.

What happened to PL-200?

Microsoft lists Power Platform Functional Consultant Associate for retirement on 31 August 2026. Microsoft has identified Intelligent Applications Builder Associate as its replacement in current partner announcements.

If you already hold PL-200, Microsoft's retirement guidance says a certification earned or renewed before retirement stays active until it expires, then moves to the historical section of your transcript.

If you are deciding now, compare the live retirement notice and the AB-410 outline before paying or investing preparation time.

Certification renewal

Microsoft states:

Fundamentals certifications do not expire.
Associate, expert and specialty certifications are renewed annually.
Eligible renewal assessments are free, online, unproctored and available during a six-month renewal window.

Retirement is different from renewal. A retired credential cannot simply be treated as a current route because it still appears on somebody's transcript.

Certification, Applied Skills or portfolio?

Microsoft describes Certifications as role-based and broad. Applied Skills credentials assess a narrower scenario.

Use the format that matches the claim:

a Certification can validate a defined range of role-related knowledge
an Applied Skills credential can validate a particular scenario
a portfolio can show how you approached a build
employment evidence can show what you owned in a real operating environment

None of these alone proves that an employer will hire you, raise your salary or trust you with production ownership.

A sensible decision process

Choose the target role.
Read the current skills outline.
Mark what you have actually used.
Build or test the missing capabilities in an authorised environment.
Use Microsoft Learn resources tied to the current outline.
Take a practice assessment if one is available.
Book only when the credential is active and still fits the role.
Keep the credential link and renewal date in your records.

The credential is useful when it accurately labels real capability. It becomes a distraction when it replaces the work.
